noonartsound:  Music and Memory

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Noon to 1 pm

O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library - Room 108

You are cordially invited to the October noonartsound presentation by Shelly Nordtorp-Madson and Jonathon Shields.  They will speak on the deep connections between music, art, and memory and how they have been touched by working with those with memory loss.

"Music and art are some of our most important tools for those who suffer memory loss - whether they be over-stressed college students who are trying to take in too much too quickly, or their grandparents suffering from age-related memory loss."   - Shelly Nordtorp-Madson

"The link between music and memory is a link that has been thoroughly underutilized.  I know from personal experience that certain music and genres of music that were important in poeple's lives can bring up memories that they have associated the music with." - Jonathon Shields

We hope you will come over your lunch hour - bring a friend - bring you lunch if you wish - beverage and light dessert will be provided.  The noonartsound series is free and open to all.

If you have any questions, please contact Julie at 651-962-5014 or jakimlinger@stthomas.edu

PHOTO TAKEN from the documentary, “Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory,” shows a nursing home patient reacting while listening to familiar music on a set of headphones. Nursing homes often use music therapy as a way to stimulate patients with dementia, as research has found that the part of the brain that stores music is the last to decline.
